Tāmaki Makaruru, known as Auckland, is the largest Polynesian city in the world and the most multicultural, featuring over 180 different ethnic groups. This rich diversity creates a lively, dynamic, and cosmopolitan environment. Auckland is recognized as one of the most livable cities globally, consistently ranking third in Mercer’s annual Quality of Living survey since 2012.  The city has a land mass of 605.67 km2.

Demographics
With a population exceeding 1.7 million, Auckland is home to more than a third of New Zealand’s residents and grew at a rate of 2.5 in 2024.  That growth was largely made up of 54,300 international migration and 10,300 natural increase. It is the top choice for over half of new migrants, drawn by its job prospects, favorable climate, breathtaking natural scenery, and vibrant urban life.  

Economy
As the economic center of New Zealand, Auckland was measured at $143,041.9m iin 2023, that equates to circa 38% of the nation’s GDP and accounts for 36% of paid employment. GDP per capita for 2023 was measured at $86,734. The region's primary employment sectors include business services, food and beverage manufacturing, health, hospitality, telecommunications, construction, machinery, and motor vehicle wholesaling. Professional, scientific and technical services made the largest contribution to overall growth in Auckland between 2022 and 2023. The industry grew by 6.8% over the period and contributed $1,021.3m to the district's total growth of $5,802.7m.

 

With a highly skilled workforce, over 36% of jobs are in knowledge-intensive industries, and Auckland houses half of New Zealand's technology professionals.
