Education

New Zealand schools and tertiary institutions have produced some global household names in all fields of endeavours, names such as that of famed mountaineer, Sir Edmund Hillary, nuclear physicist, Sir Ernest Rutherford, film producers, Taika Waititi and Jane Campion; actors and Directors such as Sam Neill, John Clark, Russell Crowe, Marton Csokas and Temuera Morrison, sportsmen and women such as Jonah Lomu and Valerie Adams, singer and songwriters such as Lorde, record making aviator, Jean Batten and the list goes on.

Our Universities

  • New Zealand is home to eight universities of the highest quality, three of which are on the South Island with the remaining five located on the North Island. All are ranked in the top 3% (600) universities in the world.
     

  • New Zealand’s universities are also highly ranked by subject. Our universities rank in the world’s top 100 in 31 out of a possible 54 subjects. Individual universities appear in the top 50 for courses in Archaeology, English Language & Literature, Linguistics, Engineering - Civil and Structural, Anatomy & Physiology, Psychology, Veterinary Science, Anthropology, Development Studies, Education, Sport-related subjects, Marketing.

Our Schools

New Zealand has three types of schools: state schools, which are government owned and funded; state integrated schools, which are government funded but may charge compulsory fees; and private schools, with set annual fees. There are 50 private schools within NZ. 

 

Schooling is compulsory for children between 5 and 16 years of age.
